MUSEUM CLOSURES

The Museum will be closed on Friday, November 12 but will open at 3:00 P.M. on Friday for Sabina Logisz visitation only.

The Museum will be open on Saturday, November 13 at 11:00 A.M. only for people attending the funeral service for Sabina Logisz. The Museum will be open to the general public after 1:00 P.M. on Saturday, November 13.

Your understanding regarding these closures is sincerely appreciated.

THE PASSING OF SABINA P. LOGISZ

Sabina Phyllis Logisz, a lifetime Northwest Side Chicagoan and an icon in the Polish American Community, born on November 10, 1916, was the daughter of Polish immigrants Bronislawa and Roman Logisz. One of 7 children, she graduated from St. Hedwig Grammar School and Holy Family Academy and received her Associate Bachelor of Arts degree from Wilbur Wright College. Ms. Logisz passed away of natural causes on November 9, one day short of her 94th birthday.

She mastered the intricacies of the Polish language despite never having been to Poland. She was also proficient in French, Latin, and Russian. She dreamed of pursuing a modeling career, but her professional travels veered in another direction. Sabina’s lifelong association with the Polish Roman Catholic Union of America (PRCUA) began during her early childhood school days and lasted until her retirement in 2002. In December of 1936, her enthusiastic interest in the newly founded Polish Museum of America (PMA), led to a 74-year “love affair” with the Museum. From 1936 until 1948, Sabina used her organizational skills to assist Mieczyslaw Haiman, the first curator of the PMA, in organizing its archival materials. After his death in 1949, she fulfilled the duties of curator and successfully secured more space for the Museum’s growing collections. In 1958, the president of the PRCUA, Stanislaus Turkiewicz, requested that Ms. Logisz become his secretary, a post she held for 23 years for several PRCUA presidents.

Cześć Jej Pamięci!

Z głębokimi kondolencjami dla członków Rodziny Pani Sabiny Logisz,

Zespół Muzeum Polskiego w Ameryce

Visitation will be held on Friday, November 12 from 3 p.m. – 8 p.m. at the Polish Museum of America, 984 N. Milwaukee Ave, Chicago. Funeral Mass will take place on Saturday, November 13 at 11 a.m. at the Polish Museum with burial at St. Adalbert Cemetery, Niles. At Late Ms. Logisz’s request, memorial donations are to be sent to the Polish Museum of America, 984 N. Milwaukee Ave, Chicago, IL 60642.

For further information contact: Walter L. Sojka Funeral Home, 312-666-2673.

Transcription records project announced

A new project will begin in October.  We are looking for volunteers to work on this project.  The Museum has a large collection of transcription recordings from WWII.  Most of these were produced by the Polish Government in Exile in London.  There are both 12" and 16" diameter recordings and were usually produced by lacquer coating glass discs although some use steel discs.  Several transcribers would be used to cut the recordings and these records would be sent to radio stations in the USA for playback.  These are all quite rare.  As you may imagine, the records are fragile and we have already lost over a dozen through breakage.  A special record player has been ordered for this project with the idea that these records will be played one more time to in order to transfer the content to current digital media and eventually for patrons to be able to play them back.  The Library of Congress has also expressed an interest in certain of the recordings as well but they have no budget to sponsor the project.  Please contact Rich Kujawa by email (any email address on this website) or at 773 384 3352 ext 206 if you are interested in volunteering for this project.

WEBSITE IMPROVEMENTS

The PMA now accepts PayPal!

PayPal

In recent Museum News posts, we have been alluding to certain upcoming website upgrades. Today, we are pleased to announce that we can now accept electronic donations using PayPal. You can contribute to the PMA using any of the convenient "Donate" buttons in our new sidebar to the right of this and certain other pages. Donations can be debited directly from your PayPal account or charged to a major credit card, including American Express, even if you don't have a PayPal account. Read more about PayPal donations in the Monetary Donations section of our Membership and Donations page.

Menu Enhancements and Sidebar

We strive to make our website informative, fast and easy to use. To that end, we have added a couple enhancements to our primary page template. One is the new sidebar on the right side of this and several other pages. With the sidebar, we can now display persistent links to items of interest without complicating our main menu or cluttering up dynamic content.

Look in the sidebar for quick and easy buttons to make electronic donations, links to GoodSearch (a search engine and shopping site that benefits the PMA), direct links to special projects (such as Neighborhood Stories), and links to the Museum and Library's social network presence on Facebook and Twitter.

We have made subtle changes to our main menu too. Run your mouse over the menu to experience enhanced highlighting and larger clickable areas. We've also compressed the blank space between items a little bit, without reducing the large, readable typeface, to reduce scrolling for those with smaller screens.

We hope you find that these enhancements improve our site. As always, comments are encouraged and appreciated. You will find a link to our email in the upper right corner of this and every other page.

The Polish Museum of America expresses its deepest condolences

The Polish Museum of America expresses its deepest condolences to the people of Poland and Polonia on the tragic deaths of President Lech Kaczynski, First Lady Maria Kaczynska, and the delegation that was traveling with them to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Katyn Massacre. Our sympathies are with the Kaczynski family and the families of all those killed in the plane crash. This tragic event is a personal loss for The Polish Museum of America – many of those who have perished had visited our institution numerous times and had become good friends of many members of the PMA staff. May they rest in peace.

Easter Egg Decorating Lecture - 7:00 p.m. March 19, 2010 at the Museum

Many people are often familiar with egg decoration that reflects a particular ethnic group. This lecture will present some of the more popular forms of Ritualistic Egg Decorating, and some less so, as practiced not only in Poland, but by it's neighbors, and those cultures surrounding them.  This is a deep, yet rich folk tradition that is shared by Slavs, and non Slavs alike in this part of Europe, that predates Christianity, and one will get a chance to glimpse, and explore the unique and interesting ways that these eggs have been decorated over centuries.  Also during this time some of the history, folk legends, and traditions that revolve around the decorated egg, will be addressed. This is a rare opportunity for the senses to experience the myriad of colors, patterns, intricacy, or simplicity that makes these eggs so special.  It is believed that one will walk away with a greater understanding, that makes these so very much more than just decorated eggs, and how it relates to the Springtime/ Easter holiday which has held such a special place in our hearts.

*Note: No part of this lecture may be recorded by any means.

Background of the speaker:

Arnie Klein, a traditional folk artist, has been decorating eggs for the last 48 years.  His work has been primarily the wax resist/ batik method of Pisanki, but additionally he has researched, studied, and put into practice numerous other techniques of egg decoration that are both traditional and non traditional, as practiced in Central Europe. These decorating techniques are reflective of Poland as well as such places as, Ukraine, The Czech and Slovak Republics, Hungary, Lithuania, Romania, and Bulgaria, to name a few.  Some of these techniques are, Linear Batik, Drop pull, Wax relief, Scratch Work, Acid Etched, as well as numerous others.  Mr. Klein has been recognized as a, "Folk Artist", by numerous institutions, museums, associations, and organizations, as well as for his continual work on the folk traditions of Central Europe, and the Diaspora.  He has also been a participant in a large variety of presentations, and festivals of folk culture such as Michigan's, "Who's Story", The Smithsonian Institute's, "Festival Of American Folk Life", as well as many such festivals throughout North America, and Europe. Additionally, he has given lectures, presentations, and exhibitions, on The Ritualistic Egg Decorating Traditions, Embroidery and Textile Traditions, and other Folk Life topics. Mr. Klein grew up in Hamtramck, Michigan, which has been know for it's huge population of Polish émigrés, and other ethnic groups settling in Hamtramck, and the surrounding Detroit area, during the early part of the previous century, and beyond.

PMA 4.0 ... Launched!

Welcome to the new English version of the Museum's website, aka, PMA 4.0! The first thing you'll probably notice is the new "look and feel." We've tried to jazz it up a little aesthetically and, at the same time, make it easier to find things and navigate the site. In addition, our mandate has always been to make our site tolerable for those folks out there who are still using dial-up, so though you may encounter more modern "bells and whistles" within PMA 4.0, we'll never add them for their own sake at the expense of bogging down your connection. Hopefully our broadband users will appreciate the speed too.

Thank you to everyone who previewed our beta version and provided valuable feedback and suggestions—our new site is better for it. And even though we're now live with PMA 4.0, we still welcome comments, suggestions and constructive criticisms.  Just click our email address in the top, right corner of this, or any other page, and drop us a line. Also watch for launch of the new Polish version of the site in March.

PADEREWSKI RECITAL IN THE WORKS

2010 is a special year at the Polish Museum of America—it's the 150th anniversary of Ignacy Jan Paderewski's birth. Those of you who have visited our Paderewski Room (especially since the recent renovation) will know of the special affinity we have for the Maestro and, indeed, of the affinity the Maestro had for us!

In honor of the great man, we are pleased to be planning a unique recital, presented by the Pianola Institute, of Paderewski piano rolls performed on a 7-foot reproducing Steinway piano. The date we have set aside for this very special event is Sunday, May 16. We are still finalizing the details so check back often for more news on this exciting event.
