Polish Past in America, 1608–1865

PolishPastInAmerica
Polish Past In America, 1680–1865
Author: Miecislaus Haiman
Copyright: 1975, Polish Museum of America
Binding: Hardcover
Pages: 178
Size (approx.): 5 1/2" x 8 1/2"
Available Copies: 50+
Price: $25

From the Author's Introduction:
"The history of the Polish immigration in the United States may be roughly divided into the following three periods:
 1. Colonial immigration, 1608–1776
 2. Political immigration, 1776–1865
 3. Economic immigration, 1865–to date
Of course, the above dates cannot be followed too strictly and it is impossible to define more accurately the limits of each period. The first Polish political exiles, for instance, arrived just before the Revolution; they sought refuge in this country even at the beginning of this century, long after the closing of the second period. It may be truly said that economic reasons, too, impelled some of the Poles to emigrate to America ever since the earliest times. But each of the above periods had some dominant character, different from the others."

Washington and Kosciuszko

Size (approx.): 5 1/2" x 8 1/2"
Available Copies: 1

From the Introduction:
"The year of 1942 opens a series of important Kosciuszko anniversaries. It is the sesquicentennial of the battle of Dubienka (July 18), the most important engagement of the Polish-Russian War of 1792, in which the military talents of Kosciuszko, then Major General of the Polish army, won for him a high recognition even from Russian generals. [...] The Polish-Russian War of 1792 had an important bearing on the Kosciuszko Insurrection, the sesquicentennial of which will be celebrated in 1944. The year of 1946 will be the bicentennial of his birth, and the year of 1797 (sic) the 150th anniversary of his second visit to America. [...] It seems proper to call attention to these anniversaries by publishing posthumously the following paper by the late Prof. Ladislaus M. Kozlowski, which hitherto remained in the manuscript."

"Biographers and others interested in the life of Thaddeus Kosciuszko have always found documented facts about him scattered and sparse. To improve on this situation and to contribute constructively to the celebration of the Bicentennial of the American Revolution, The Polish Museum of America has decided to publish the Kosciuszko letters and documents in its Archives as part of its Bicentennial Publications."
