Join us for a compelling presentation on the life and art of Florian Durzynski, who immigrated from Poland to Chicago in 1929 and found a home for his heart in West Town, Chicago’s historic Polish downtown. Initially making his mark as a portrait painter, Florian’s artistic path took a dramatic turn during the Great Depression when he was hired by the Works Progress Administration (WPA) to paint murals for Chicago Public Schools.

He hoped these monumental public artworks would leave a lasting impression on generations of students and community members.
But creating large-scale murals was only part of his journey. Florian also faced the challenges of a permanent physical impediment, unresolved childhood trauma, and the deeper question of where he truly belonged.

If you’re interested in art, personal stories, or Chicago’s rich history, you’ll be captivated by the many powerful images presented by Gail Tanzer in her visually engaging PowerPoint.

*Books will be available for purchase at the presentation.

Gail Tanzer graduated from the University of Chicago with her master’s degree, worked as a social worker, and then an art history teacher. She now writes historical fiction books to illuminate artists who once were famous or attained a lot but are now little known.
