On July 24, 1915, the passenger steamer Eastland capsized while docked on the Chicago River, claiming 844 lives—including hundreds of members of Chicago’s Polish community. Many were families and workers preparing for a company picnic, making the tragedy one of the deadliest maritime disasters in American history.

The Eastland Disaster left a profound mark on Chicago and on generations of Polish Americans. Today, we honor the memory of all those who lost their lives and reflect on the resilience of the communities that endured this unimaginable loss.
