The PMA mourns the loss of Life Member Helena Sromek

Helena Sromek, age 78, of Chicago, passed away peacefully on April 9, 2022, after a brief battle with cancer.

Beloved wife of the late Józef Biskup and the late Marian Sromek. Loving mother of Agnieszka Biskup, Anna Sromek (Juan Alejandre), Irena Sromek, Piotr Sromek (Sindy Sun), and Teresa Sromek. Devoted grandmother of Rafael Alejandre, Konrad Alejandre, Nicholas Sromek, and Alexander Sromek. Dear sister of Anna Włoch, the late Jadwiga Gielniewska, George Gielniewski, Michael Gielniewski, Jolanta Stephenson, Krzysztof Gielniewski, and Ursula Karcz. Beloved daughter of the late Wacława and late Wacław Gielniewski. Fond aunt to many nieces and nephews. Born in Podsmardzewo, Poland, Helena taught grade school before emigrating to the U.S. in 1962. In 1976, she became one of the first students to earn an MA in Polish studies from the University of Illinois at Chicago. She served as a teacher of foreign languages and ESL at Marie Sklodowska Curie Metropolitan High School and taught at Gen. Casimir Pulaski Saturday School, where she served as principal from 1985 through 2000.

A visitation will be held Wednesday, April 20, 2022, at Malec & Sons Funeral Home, 6000 N. Milwaukee Ave., Chicago, IL from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. The funeral mass will be Thursday, April 21, at Holy Trinity Church, 1118 N. Noble St., Chicago, IL at 11:00 a.m.

Burial at Maryhill Catholic Cemetery, 8600 N. Milwaukee Ave., Niles, IL.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Helena’s name may be made to the Polish Museum of America (984 N. Milwaukee Ave., Chicago, IL 60642).

Muzeum Polskie w Ameryce żegna swoją Członkinię Wieczystą Śp. Helenę Sromek

Dnia 9 kwietnia 2022 roku po krótkiej walce z rakiem zmarła 78-letnia Śp. Helena Sromek z Chicago.

Ukochana żona Śp. Józefa Biskupa i Śp. Mariana Sromka. Kochająca mama Agnieszki Biskup, Anny Sromek (Juan Alejandre), Ireny Sromek, Piotra Sromka (Sindy Sun) i Teresy Sromek. Oddana babcia Rafaela Alejandre, Konrada Alejandre, Nicholasa Sromka i Alexandra Sromka. Ukochana siostra Anny Włoch, Śp. Jadwigi Gielniewskiej, George’a Gielniewskiego, Michaela Gielniewskiego, Jolanty Stephenson, Krzysztofa Gielniewskiego i Ursuli Karcz. Ukochana córka Śp. Wacławy i Śp. Wacława Gielniewskiego. Kochająca ciocia wielu siostrzenic i siostrzeńców.

Urodzona w Podsmardzewie, Śp. Helena Sromek uczyła w szkole podstawowej w Polsce. Emigrowała do USA w 1962 roku. W 1976 roku została jedną z pierwszych studentek, które uzyskały tytuł magistra polonistyki na Uniwersytecie Illinois w Chicago. Była nauczycielką języków obcych i ESL w Metropolitan High School im. Marii Skłodowskiej Curie oraz uczyła w Sobotniej Szkole im. gen. Kazimierza Pułaskiego, gdzie pełniła funkcję kierownika placówki w latach 1985-2000.

Pożegnanie odbędzie się w domu pogrzebowym Malec & Sons, pod adresem 6000 N. Milwaukee Ave., Chicago, IL w środę, 20 kwietnia, w godzinach od 16 do 20. Msza pogrzebowa odbędzie się we czwartek, 21 kwietnia, w kościele Świętej Trójcy pod adresem 1118 N. Noble St., Chicago, IL o godzinie 11:00.

Śp. Pani Helena spocznie na cmentarzu Maryhill, 8600 N. Milwaukee Ave., Niles, IL.

Na prośbę rodziny, zamiast kwiatów można przekazywać datki na Muzeum Polskie w Ameryce (984 N. Milwaukee Ave., Chicago, IL 60642). Serdecznie dziękujemy za ten piękny gest.

    I used to love going to her office ❤️ she was an amazing teacher and great support for us immigrant kids.
    Pani Sromek made a difference, she truly cared about us.

    She is a wonderful woman who worked tirelessly for her children and for our Polish school. She was an amazing principal. My father, Kazimierz Brozyna, and I will keep her in our hearts and our prayers go out to her and her family.

    I worked with Helena Sromek at Curie HS, she was a teacher dedicated to her craft and her students. I am very thankful that our paths crossed and had the opportunity to get to know her. She loved her own children very much and was extremely proud of all of them. My sincere condolences to the family.
